Four people were killed and several others were injured in a shooting at a birthday party in Dadeville Saturday night, an Alabama law enforcement agency said.
The firing happened around 10:30 pm at the birthday party of Sgt. said Jeremy Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. There is no initial confirmation about what caused the firing. It was not immediately known whether any suspects were in custody.
“This incident tragically resulted in the loss of four lives and many more people were injured,” Burkett said during a news conference Sunday morning.
The shootings rocked the small town of 3,200. Jagran was organized on Sunday night.
Dadville Chief Jonathan L. Floyd paused to regain his composure before speaking at the news conference.
Floyd said, “What we’ve done is something that no community should have to endure. I just ask for your patience. It’s going to be a long process, but I sincerely pray for you.” “
Chaplain Ben Hayes, who serves as chaplain for the Dadeville Police Department and the local high school football team, said most of the victims are teenagers because the shooting happened at a birthday party for a 16-year-old. He said the shooting was shocking in a small town where serious crime is rare.
“One of the young men who was killed was one of our star athletes and just a great guy. So I knew a lot of these students. Dadeville is a small town and it’s going to affect everybody in the area,” Hayes said.
The Tallapoosa County School System said counseling will be available to students at schools on Monday, said Raymond C. Porter, superintendent of schools.
WRBL-TV reported That the shooting took place in a dance studio. The station showed images of crime scene tapes surrounding the Mahogany Masterpiece Dance Studio and surrounding buildings and the heavy police presence.
“This morning, I join the people of Dadeville and my fellow Alabamians in mourning. Violent crime has no place in our state, and we are staying closely updated by law enforcement as details emerge,” In a statement posted by Ivey of Alabama Gov. social media.
The White House said President Joe Biden has been briefed about the shooting, is closely monitoring the situation and is in contact with local officials and law enforcement to offer support.
Dadeville is in east Alabama, approximately 57 miles (92 km) northeast of Montgomery, Alabama.
