US charges 28 members of Sinaloa Cartel, El Chapo’s sons

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Justice Department on Friday charged 28 members of Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa cartel, including the son of a notorious… drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmánin a massive fentanyl-smuggling investigation.

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the charges Friday, along with Drug Enforcement Administration chief Anne Milgram and other top federal prosecutors. Charges were filed against cartel leaders as well as alleged chemical suppliers, laboratory managers, fentanyl traffickers, security leaders, financiers and arms traffickers.

The indictments announced on Friday charge three of Guzmán’s sons, known as the Chapitos, or Little Chapos, and who have earned a reputation as the cartel’s more violent and aggressive faction.

The indictments accuse Chinese and Guatemalan citizens of supplying precursor chemicals needed to make fentanyl. Prosecutors said others charged in the cases include those accused of running drug labs and providing security and weapons for drug-trafficking operations.

About 107,000 Americans will die of drug overdose in the US in 2021.

The notorious drug lord of the Sinaloa Cartel was convicted in 2019 of running an industrial-scale smuggling operation. At his trial, prosecutors said evidence gathered since the late 1980s showed he and his murderous cartel made billions of dollars smuggling cocaine, heroin, meth and marijuana into the US.
